Background
Alternative Names | C-X-C motif chemokine 10, CXCL10, 10 kDa interferon gamma-induced protein, IP-10, gamma-IP10, INP10, CRG2, IFI10, MOB-1, Small-inducible cytokine B10, SCYB10 |
Function | Interferon-gamma–inducible protein 10 (IP-10), also known as CXCL10, is a member of the CXC chemokine family. IP-10 expression is triggered in monocytes, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and epithelial cells in response to inflammatory cytokines—most notably Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma). Functionally, IP-10 acts as a chemoattractant, guiding activated T lymphocytes (especially Th1 cells), natural killer (NK) cells, and monocytes to sites of inflammation. Additionally, IP-10 has been implicated in angiostasis in both inflammatory conditions and the tumor microenvironment. IP-10 binds to the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), CXCR3, expressed on activated Th1 cells, NK cells, and monocytes. |
Tissue Specificity | IP-10 expression is reported to be constitutively low prior to upregulation by IFN-gamma and inflammatory stimulation in immune cells (such as monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells), epithelial cells (lung, kidney, skin), endothelial cells (vascular tissue, blood vessels) and lymphoid tissue (lymph nodes, spleen). |
Cellular Localization | Secreted |
Involvement in Disease | Dysregulation of IP-10 is reported in autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, type 1 diabetes), infectious diseases and cancer (tumor microenvironment). |
