Background
Alternative Names | CCL3, C-C Motif Chemokine 3, Macrophage Inflammatory Protein 1-alpha, MIP1A, Small-inducible Cytokine A3, SCYA3, SIS-beta, Tonsillar Lymphocyte LD78 alpha Protein, LD78a |
Function | Human MIP-1 alpha (macrophage inflammatory protein-1 alpha), also known as CCL3, is a member of the CC chemokine family. MIP-1 alpha exerts chemotactic properties on monocytes, T lymphocytes, and dendritic cells to sites of infection or injury. MIP-1α primarily exerts its effects by binding to G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), particularly CCR1 and CCR5. |
Tissue Specificity | MIP-1 alpha is primarily secreted by macrophages and monocytes, with secretion noted in dendritic cells, activated T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. MIP-1 alpha expression has been reported in lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, lung tissue, liver tissue, and synovial tissues. |
Cellular Localization | Secreted protein |
Involvement in Disease | Dysregulation of MIP-1 alpha has been reported in autoimmune and inflammatory disorders (rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis), HIV, tumor microenvironment, neuroinflammation, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). |
