| Function | Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2 (BMP-2) mediates several functions related to cartilage and bone formation. During embryonic development, BMP-2 contributes to dorsal-ventral patterning of the developing neural tube, and influences differentiation of endoderm, mesenchymal cells, and chondrocytes. In response to tissue damage, BMP-2 promotes chondrogenesis, migration of keratinocytes, and angiogenesis. BMP-2 signaling occurs via binding to BMPR1A (CD292) and BMPR2, at which point BMPR2 transphosphorylates BMPR1A to induce the Smad signaling pathway. |
