Background
Alternative Names | Neuregulin1 beta 1, Neuregulin1 b1, Heregulin, Heregulin b1, Acetylcholine receptor inducing activity, ARIA, Breast cancer cell differentiation factor p45, GGF, GGF2, Glial Growth Factor, HGL, HRG, HRG beta 1, HRG1, NDF, Neu Differentiation Factor, Neuregulin 1, NRG1, SMDF, Sensory and Motor Neuron Derived Factor |
Function | Heregulin beta 1 (HRG-beta1), also named Neuregulin 1, plays a role in the development and function of the nervous system and heart. HRG-beta1 is also involved in the development and maintenance of synapses including the regulation of neurotransmitters and the branching morphogenesis of mammary glands. Signaling occurs with HRG-beta1 binding to either ErbB3 (Her3) or ErbB4 (Her4), which promotes recruitment of ErbB2 (Her2) and signal transduction through the MAPK and phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) pathways. |
Tissue Specificity | HRG-beta1 expression has been identified in brain, spinal cord, neurons, glial cells, peripheral nerves, heart, mammary gland, skin, lungs, kidneys ovaries and testes. |
Cellular Localization | Membrane-bound and cleaved soluble protein forms |
Involvement in Disease | Dysregulation of HRG-beta1 is associated with cardiac hypertrophy, diabetic neuropathy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), metabolic syndrome, obesity, schizophrenia, and various cancers (breast, prostate, colorectal, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), and ovarian). |
