Alternative Names | Interleukin 13, IL13, P600, NC30, MGC116786, MGC116788, MGC116789 |
Function | Interleukin-13 (IL-13) is a cytokine primarily produced by T helper type 2 (Th2) cells, as well as other immune cells like mast cells, basophils, and eosinophils. It promotes the activation, differentiation, and survival of B cells, including Ig class switching. IL-13 enhances the survival and migration of epithelial cells in various organs, coupling this with its anti-parasitic Th2-mediated response in these organs. IL-13 signaling occurs when it binds IL13RA1 (CD213A1) which heterodimerizes with IL-4R alpha (CD124) to activate the JAK/STAT signal pathway. |
Tissue Specificity | IL-13 expression has been identified in gastrointestinal and lung epithelial tissue. |
Cellular Localization | Secreted protein |
Involvement in Disease | Dysregulation of IL-13 is associated with asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, scleroderma, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and allergic conjunctivitis. |
