Background
Alternative Names | Interleukin 21, Za11, CVID11 |
Function | Interleukin-21 (IL-21) is a cytokine that plays a role in coordinating immune responses and maintaining immune system balance. IL-21 is produced by NKT cells, Th17 cells and T follicular helper cells (Tfh). It functions in downregulating regulatory T (Treg) cells and modulating B cell activation and differentiation into plasma cells and memory B cells. Through the stimulation of NK cells and CD8 T cells, IL-21 is associated with antitumor activity. IL-21 signaling occurs through the heterodimer receptor complex of IL-21R (CD360) and the common gamma chain (CD132). |
Tissue Specificity | IL-21 expression has been identified in spleen, lymph nodes, tonsils, thymus, gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), skin, and liver. |
Cellular Localization | Secreted protein |
Involvement in Disease | Dysregulation of IL-21 is associated with autoimmune disorders (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)), asthma, allergic rhinitis, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis. |
