Background
Alternative Names | Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor, Neurotrophin, Abrineurin, ANON2, BULN2 |
Function | Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a protein that plays a crucial role in the development, growth, maintenance, and survival of neurons. BDNF regulates neurogenesis of new neurons from neural stem cells by promoting axon and dendritic growth. BDNF enhances neuroprotection and regulates synaptic plasticity in mature neurons, thus affecting aspects of mood regulation, learning, memory and other cognitive functions. BDNF binds to TrkB as the high affinity signaling receptor, but association with the low-affinity p75-NTR has been reported. |
Tissue Specificity | BDNF expression has been reported in brain (hippocampus, cortex, and basal forebrain), peripheral nerves, heart, skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, liver, thymus, and lung. |
Cellular Localization | Secreted protein |
Involvement in Disease | Dysregulation of BDNF has been associated with bipolar disorder, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and epilepsy. |
