Alternative Names | Thrombopoietin, THPO, Myeloproliferative Leukemia Virus Oncogene Ligand, Megakaryocyte Growth And Development Factor, Megakaryocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor, Thrombopoietin Nirs, C-Mpl Ligand, MPLLG, MGDF, THCYT1, CAMT2, MKCSF |
Function | Thrombopoietin (Tpo) plays an important role in the proliferation and maturation of megakaryocytes and their progenitors in regulating platelet production. Tpo has a role in promoting the survival, self-renewal, and expansion of hematopoietic stem cells, along with primitive multilineage progenitor cells. This has led to further interest in applications for in vitro and ex vivo maintenance, expansion and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells. Tpo is the ligand for c-Mpl (CD110). |
Tissue Specificity | Tpo is primarily synthesized in the liver, and to lesser degrees in the kidneys, bone marrow and spleen. |
Cellular Localization | Secreted protein |
Involvement in Disease | Dysregulation of Tpo is associated with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), thrombocytosis, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia. |
