Background
Alternative Names | Epidermal Growth Factor, Beta-Urogastrone, Urogastrone, URG, HOMG4 |
Function | EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor) is a growth factor that plays several roles related to cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation mediated through binding to its receptor, EGFR (Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor). EGF may be expressed in macrophages, platelets, plasma, milk, urine, saliva, seminal fluid, amniotic fluid and cerebrospinal fluid. Several roles are attributed to EGF such as angiogenesis, epithelial cell growth and maintenance, keratinocyte proliferation, gastrointestinal mucosa integrity, along with neurogenesis and neuronal survival. Due to these wide-ranging functions as a growth factor, EGF is commonly used in cell culture for the maintenance and growth of cell lines, stem cells and 3-D organoids. |
Tissue Specificity | EGF expression has been reported in skin, gastrointestinal epithelial tissue, salivary glands, kidney, brain, liver, mammary glands, ovaries and testes. |
Cellular Localization | Membrane-bound and cleaved soluble protein forms. |
Involvement in Disease | Dysregulation of EGF is associated with several cancers (lung cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and head and neck cancer), psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), diabetic nephropathy, polycystic kidney disease, peptic ulcers and impaired wound healing. |
